PLAYLIST: Training Bangers

The Sport Story team was at one of our all-time favourite gyms recently, one where we’ve honestly felt at home for years. The trainers are exceptional people, the sessions are tough and varied. However, while sweating away (tyre flips, ugh!), we had a little moment of clarity as lyrics filtered in from a booming speaker: "Tonight I want a slut, would you be mine? I heard you was freaky from a friend of mine."

For the uninitiated, the track is D12’s ‘Shake That’. It certainly has the thumping beat you’d want on a workout playlist, but actually noticing the lyrics felt a little uncomfortable. It’s not particularly motivating to be called a slut* over a PA system… in fact, it was pretty deflating. When you go the gym, the track, for a run, or you’re about to step over that white line come game time, you want to be uplifted and feel like the most powerful, kick-ass version of yourself. That’s why we listen to music before we train or compete, and we’re sure you do too.

So, we decided to curate our own fire playlist with a few important requirements. On this, frankly epic, playlist there are no references to women as sluts or derogatory sexual objects (although there is some bad language, consider this your warning!) We didn’t want songs about love or ‘getting a man’ either, because that’s not really our game. There’s no restriction on genres or genders. Instead, we focused on songs about getting it done, taking names, and surpassing limits. 

The result? We are very proud to present the first of many Sport Story Training Bangers! Coming in hot from the New Year, the Feb 2017 playlist is a mix of 2016 releases and never-fail classics (is it worth it? Lemme work it) It comes in just over one hour long, perfect for a warm-up and 45 minute power session. 

Some highlights include:

  • Charlie XCX’s thumping and very fitting ‘Trophy’

  • ‘Tennies’ by pintsized powerhouse Tkay Maidza, sounding like the second coming of M.I.A

  • A little Vic Mensa and Skrillex, with ‘No Chill’ to remind you that you were born ready

*Editor’s Note: Obviously D12 wasn’t directly calling me a slut that day. Nobody was! But the loud, repeated reference to women as sluts still makes it feel as if they’re singing about you by association. Food for thought.
